Call it divine intervention: Wieuca Road Baptist Church will be staying on Peachtree Road, across from Phipps Plaza.
Earlier this month, news broke that the church was contemplating selling their prime 4.6-acre Buckhead site for potential redevelopment. However, according to Reporter Newspapers, the church membership has voted to remain on the site, which they have called home for 60 years.
A sale of the land could have been a game-changer, freeing up a prominent corner just north of Lenox Square for redevelopment. The church shares the block with the Ritz-Carlton Residences and sits just across from the new AC Hotel and a planned new location of Ecco.
However, for now, the prospect of a multi-million dollar payout couldn’t entice the church into a sale. As the value on the land continues to go up, will the church stay rooted in the neighborhood?
Elsewhere in Atlanta — including Druid Hills and Old Fourth Ward, to name just two — houses of worship have cashed in on this development cycle.
