If Atlanta development were the 2016 Emmys, Ponce City Market would be Game of Thrones.
According to a news release, the 2.1 million-square-foot behemoth captured four new awards recently that honored its impact on the city, sustainability, and walkability.
Given the sheer size of the building, the fact that it was an adaptive-reuse project, and the range of uses it contains, it isn’t all that shocking it’s nabbing accolades.
Ponce City Market is a big place with a little bit of everything inside: residences, retail, offices, a food hall, a parking structure, and even a rooftop amusement park.
While the building hasn’t been open that long, it's already made a big impact on the city. And, the critics have been saying great things.
The latest awards and recognition include:
- 2016 Global Award for Excellence from Urban Land Institute — the first project in the Southeast to win this national award recognizing a "high standard of excellence in design, construction, economics, planning, and management" in more than a decade.
- 2016 Project of the Year from Urban Land Institute Atlanta — the local chapter of ULI also recognized the project as one of the most transformational of the year.
- LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council — certification at this level indicates that the building was constructed and operates in an environmentally friendly way. Features include the reuse of existing material, water-efficient fixtures and landscaping, and energy-efficient LED lighting and HVAC systems.
- "Golden Shoe" Award from PEDS — the award recognizes Ponce City Market for its pedestrian-friendly location and design, promoting alternatives to driving including a bike valet, direction connection to Beltline, a tenant shuttle to MARTA, and the inclusion of Zipcars and EV charging stations.
Developers take note: Adaptive-reuse can be a major, major success in Atlanta.
