With a $1 million gift from the City of Atlanta, the Woodruff Arts Center is now fully funded for a massive renovation in advance of its 50th anniversary.
According to the AJC, funding for the overhaul was reached thanks to a range of donors, including many typical Atlanta heavy-hitters like the Woodruff Foundation, Coca-Cola, and Delta.
The $110 million raised will support not just a $22-million facelift for the aging Alliance Theatre, but also endowments, expansion of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and programs for families at the arts complex.
The inside of the Alliance Theatre will be gutted, with new curvaceous wood blacony wraps being added, accentuated by LED lighting. Additionally, the renovation will boost the backstage aspects of the venue with new lighting catwalks, rehearsal spaces, and flexible performance rooms.
During renovations next year, the theater will be out of service, with other venues across the city standing in for the Alliance. Work will wrap up in 2018.
