Though no ground has been broken, nor will we see cool, futuristic trams downtown anytime soon, the streetcar project is underway. The Atlanta City Council's Finance Committee got the massive bureaucratic paperwork part of the process going by approving the leasing of land to store and service street cars and also agreed to provide more than $10 million bucks to reconfigure utilities infrastructure along the streetcar's planned route. Oh, and for those not previously aware- a streetcar is being built downtown. It will run a 2.6 mile path from Centennial Olympic Park to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Traffic de-congestion, economic development and increased tourism to follow shortly thereafter. [Saporta Report / Atlanta Business Chronicle]
