It's a sad day for the Atlanta LGBT community and fans of bookstores and locally-owned retail- Outwrite will close the doors on its space at the corner of 10th & Piedmont for the final time tonight. When owner Philip Rafshoon made the original announcement that they would need to flee to less-expensive retail space, there seemed hope they could simply relocate the business. But as we all know, the book business ain't what it used to be, and the store is now closing for good and declaring bankruptcy. Beyond a place to buy books and hang out, Outwrite is a symbol, loaded with significance for many folks in Atlanta, LGBT and otherwise. Certain attitudes in Atlanta have evolved quite a bit over the years- cheers to Outwrite for being such a positive force in that evolution. [Creative Loafing]
