Tracks haven’t even been laid, but Atlanta’s had a new trolley service running for about a week now. And by trolley we mean one of those buses souped up with vintage-y embellishment that residents of Savannah love to hate. Okay, so it’s not the real thing, but it does represent the return of a sightseer pleaser that’s been M.I.A. since January 2010 when Atlanta Trolley Tours called it quits. Marietta tourism power couple Brian and Cassandra Buckalew (proprietors of the Historic Marietta Trolley Company, Marietta Pedicabs, and Marietta Ghost Tours) knew an opportunity when they saw it, officially launching the Peachtree Trolley Company last week. A ticket grants a 90 minute narrated tour of such landmarks as Oakland Cemetery, the State Capitol, and the Fox Theatre; lest you fear the imminent takeover of Atlanta’s streets by trolley-busses, rest assured that there’s currently only one vehicle and it operates a scant two days a week. Ideas for future expansion include ghost tours and pub crawls, but there’s been grumblings from the horses pulling carriages around downtown that a few pedicabs would only be fair.
