Atlanta's Pinko Underbelly

Phoenix Flies will have Atlantans a-touring pretty soon, but here’s one jaunt you’re not likely to see during that event: “The People’s Tour of Atlanta.” It’s somewhat randomly placed on the website of the Georgia Tech Student Planning Association, and would probably inspire nightmares for the majority of those working under the Gold Dome. A tour through the guts of Atlanta as seen by a hard leftist? The horror! Even if you don’t jive with the author politically, it’s worth scanning for the historical tidbits. Who knew that a part of Midtown was referred to as “Red Square” in the 1970s, or that rogue jitneys were operated along the streetcar lines in 1917 as a middle finger to Georgia Power? Go forth, and annoy your friends with useless trivia!
