As developers race to inflate the next bubble, er, build much-needed rental housing for a nation that has forsworn home ownership forever, Smyrna/Vinings is saying,"nein." The Cobb Planning Commission voted yesterday against Walton Communities' request to re-zone nearly 25 acres adjacent to the intersection of Mt.Wilkinson Parkway and Spring Hill Parkway so they could build a new 262-unit apartment community. Walton is merely the latest company to have its plans thwarted on the site in a dance that has been going on between Cobb County and real estate developers for over 20 years; opponents to the re-zoning have sought to preserve a buffer between existing apartment communities and single family home subdivisions nearby. Walton was offering to set aside a nice chunk of the property in a conservation easement...this fact seems to have left the door open to a revised plan being reconsidered. [Marietta Daily Journal]
