Atlanta: Still Sprawling After All These Years

Given the Atlanta metro area's well-publicized housing woes, it may come as a surprise to some that we rank in the top 10 for new construction permits issued in 2011. "Sure," you say, "but most of those were for apartments." Not quite....of 8,634 permits issued, just 28% were for multi-family dwellings. While this is in line with some other suburban-heavy metro areas (Houston, Phoenix), places like L.A. and Dallas are building far less single family product. Looking at the data, it's difficult to argue against the author's conclusion: "[t]he future of sprawl, therefore, is not California. Houston, Phoenix, and Atlanta are America’s current capitals of low-density construction." Sigh. [The Atlantic Cities]
