" If you don’t believe in sustainability, I don’t think you believe in modernity." Thus spoke Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed at this morning's Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable in making the case for greening the city, and affirming his commitment to putting Atlanta in the Top 10 of sustainable cities in the U.S. (even though no one is compiling these rankings at present). And while his goal of besting perennial green model cities like Seattle and Portland may be lofty, it would appear Reed is willing to spend money and political capital in pushing the city toward a more sustainable future. In addition to promoting the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge, Hizzoner previewed a nearly-funded bike share program the city is planning to launch and expressed a desire to block off some city streets for pedestrian use a la Times Square in Manhattan.
