What's even better than one hot real estate rumor? Two real estate rumors smashed together! While one doesn't necessarily associate Walmart with visionary achievements in sustainable development, a site for sale along The Atlanta BeltLine and across from Glenwood Park may provide Atlanta with an example. A few months ago we passed along the rumor that Sembler, the retail developer responsible for Atlanta mixed-use shopping landmarks like Town Brookhaven and the Edgewood Retail District had the former LaFarge concrete facility property on Glenwood Avenue under contract. After a few months of relative silence on the site's fate, our friends at Creative Loafing are now reporting the rumor that everyone's favorite "killer of dreams and kittens"- Walmart- is sniffing around the 20+ acre parcel. Though no mention of Sembler is made, the two behemoths have worked together many times before, and having Walmart as an anchor is a great way to get a project financed in these hardscrabble times. As discussed in the CL piece's Comments section, potential implications for the BeltLine are unclear. Freak-outs may commence....now.
