Grasping the Single Family Rental Boom

We don't usually associate McPaper, er, USA Today with in-depth reporting, but this piece that puts the single family rental boom in context is excellent. In examining the issue from various perspectives, including former homeowners now renting, the private equity business folk pouring billions into single family investments and the neighbors of these rental properties, the significance of this real estate bust byproduct is put into sharp relief. Some interesting data regarding growth in single family rentals (from 2005-2010) can also be found in a column running along the piece's left side. While one would expect foreclosure-ridden Atlanta to be in league with other bust poster children like Las Vegas and Phoenix, as it turns out, we're in the lower end of the spectrum at ...a phenomenon we're frankly at a loss to explain.
