Sweet Auburn Back on the Endangered List

The National Trust for Historic Preservation released its 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list, and unfortunately the Sweet Auburn district has been included for the second time in 10 years. Though the successful revitalization of the parallel Edgewood corridor's commercial district on the southeast side of downtown has been a bright spot amid the gloom of the past several years, much of Auburn Avenue's commercial corridor stands vacant and thereby imperiled. As we noted yesterday, it is hoped that the Atlanta Streetcar will spur economic development around its path, which runs down Auburn Avenue. But vacancies in the corridor, including historic properties like the Atlanta Daily World, Atlanta Life Insurance and the original Southern Christian Leadership Conference buildings leave the historic district open to being destroyed by new development.
