Though current temperatures are mercifully hovering in the 80's, we'd bet most Atlanta homes' air conditioners have been running somewhat non-stop for at least a couple of months now. While that sweet, sweet conditioned air is here to stay (as long as there's electricity to generate it), it's worth noting that there used to be another way Southerners stayed cool in their abodes- by employing the "shotgun" style of architecture. (bonus: it kept property taxes down as well). While living in a shotgun shack is today most commonly associated with a socioeconomic condition one has risen out out of, this humble house's design is pretty damn smart. If the End Times come and take electricity with them, you could do worse than throw one of these up. [treehugger]
