The jokesters at Dad's Garage Theatre Company may have found the "forever home" they've been pining for. On Thursday night, the displaced improv company made a formal pitch to Candler Park Neighborhood Organization's Zoning Committee, outlining plans to possibly lease space at the funky retail complex that is 351 Moreland Ave. Two restaurants — Front Page News and Tijuana Garage — currently call the site home. According to the CPNO, Dad's Garage would occupy part of the existing building and build new facilities behind it, toward the rear of the lot. Since last summer, when Dad's Garage's longtime Inman Park facilities were razed for the 280 Elizabeth St. mixed-use development, the company has been temporarily sharing stages with venues that include 7 Stages in Little 5 Points. And it sounds like they've been doing their research.
Dad's Garage board member Amanda Rhein told the CPNO her group has been evaluating some 20 locations in search of a perfect "forever home," and the Little Five Points locale remains among their top choices, the committee reported. This being Atlanta, a potential sticking point could be parking; building the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 square-foot facility Dad's would require for stages, offices and other uses would consume some parking areas currently used by existing restaurants. Neighbors on Josephine Street, whose properties abut the site, would also be asked to weigh in, if plans move forward.
