Mark your calendars: Roughly two years from now, delays be damned, the Beltline's Westside Trail will be open for public enjoyment. The excitement for the three-mile, multi-use trail's transformative potential was palpable in Adair Park on Wednesday morning, as droves of dignitaries, media and curious locals turned out for a ceremonial groundbreaking. Unlike some dog-and-pony shows for major Atlanta projects, the event appeared to mark the beginning of actual construction. When finished, the trail will be 14-feet wide (similar to its Eastside counterpart, which is roughly 1/3 shorter) with 14 access points. Officials call the $43 million investment unprecedented in Southwest Atlanta. Keep tabs on progress at the project's construction page. For glimpses of the ultimate Westside Trail vision, see here.
