Today marks the sesquicentennial of General William Sherman's display of pyromania as he left Atlanta to march to Savannah. The episode, likely the worst day in our city's history (except maybe that time the Thrashers moved to Canada), gave us the dubious distinction of the only North American city to be torched in an act of war. While it kind of sucks that Sherman burned the city down, we do have him to thank for our legit Phoenix on the city's seal and that inspiring "Resurgens" motto, a precursor to "Rise Up!" [AJC]
