A Buckhead strip mall may be destined to become apartments. As a camera-wielding tipster points out, at least one business in the Brookwood Square shopping plaza at 2140 Peachtree Road — home to Cafe Sunshineflower, a salon, some medical-type offices, et cetera — is moving out. According to a sign posted in the storefront of a medical supply store, "apartments are being built here." Though those plans haven't been officially confirmed, documents filed last year would seem to support that assertion.
Last September, Houston-based Grayco Partners LLC filed for rezoning on the not-quite-two-acre property near Colonial Homes Drive. According to documents, Grayco wanted to bring "a multifamily community of 238 for rent units." About 70 percent of the apartments would be one-bedroom and another 25 percent two-bedroom; square footage would range from 750 to 1,500, and average monthly rent was pegged at a relatively steep $2,000. Messages left with Grayco went unreturned.
There are several thousands apartments in the Buckhead pipeline, so what's a few hundred more? Maybe this more southern realm of the neighborhood is underserved?
