Transformations

From June 20-22, the two-block stretch of Auburn Avenue between Fort and Jackson streets will be temporarily transformed with bike lanes, community art, pop-up shops, live music, outdoor cafes and more as part of the "Sweet Auburn: Living Beyond Expectations" event. The goal of the project, part of the Atlanta Regional Commission's "Living Beyond Expectations" initiative, is to help neighborhoods become walkable, healthy areas with a variety of housing and transit options for people of all ages. A workshop was held in March to gather ideas from the public (see this video to see how a community in Texas was transformed), which included everything from adding "whimsical wayfinding signs" to outdoor movie screenings, bicycle lanes separated from traffic, murals and outdoor seating. The build-out will use inexpensive or donated materials and volunteers are still needed. [Sweet Auburn: Living Beyond Expectations]
