In a move that might make it more dangerous for clowns to cross the street but significantly safer for everyone else, Decatur is considering colorful painted concrete crosswalks as an alternative to its worn-down brick ones. (The photo is from Ft. Lauderdale.) Whether you love the idea or hate it, you have to admit that crosswalks don't get much more high-visibility than that. The arty crossings are just one traffic calming measure the city is looking at in an effort to make the pedestrian-friendly area even more so. Others include traffic circles, roundabouts, speedtables, chicanes, center island narrowing and raised crosswalks. [Decatur Metro]
