ATL Urbanist spotlights a win-lose situation brewing downtown, where "a ridiculous variance" will allow the Atlanta Legal Aid Society to raze two old structures to make way for surface parking. Good news: The Legal Aid Society will pour $5.4 million into renovating an eye-pleasing 1908 building (originally an Elks Club lodge) at 54 Ellis St. Not-so-good news: Next door, the city has green-lighted the demolition of a 1920 structure (formerly the southern headquarters of Mack Trucks) and a circa-1890 house that could be downtown's oldest wood-frame home.
