Bibliophiles Rejoice! New & Improved Libraries Are on the Way!

New, 7 comments

The Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History has closed, but it's only temporary. For now, the collections and staff have been moved to the Central Library at Margaret Mitchell Square while their 56,000-square-foot permanent home gets a $14 million renovation and expansion. The project — led by the architectural/engineering team of J. W. Robinson & Associates and Freelon Group — will include a new cafe and gift shop, a newly added 240-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and improved archives. The new and improved version of the 20-year-old library, located on Auburn Avenue at Courtland Street, is expected to open late next year. Fulton County voters approved a library bond referendum back in 2008 (progress takes time) and the Auburn Avenue Research Library is just one of the projects paid for with the $275 million. Phase I of the program includes this expansion, expansion of South Fulton Library and eight brand new book-lovers paradises: Alpharetta, East Roswell, Milton, Northwest Atlanta, Palmetto, Southeast Atlanta, Stewart-Lakewood and Wolf Creek.
