$5 Million Plantation-Style Estate has Goats, Art, Modernity

New, 9 comments

Hearing "$5 million estate" tends to bring to mind opulent traditional design, maybe some carved columns, heavy curtains and monstrous crystal chandeliers in every room. This 12,767-square-foot manor is surprisingly lacking in over-designed elements after receiving a full renovation/expansion in 2010. The exterior is as expected, but inside, the five-bedroom 1967 home feels more modern and livable than some of its brethren at similar price points. There are two kitchens, one for cooking and one for baking (who doesn't have a separate baking kitchen), as well as a finished terrace level with a den, music room, gym, art room and lanai with retractable iron walls that lead to a heated pool. Tropical! Outside, the 5.5-acre lot features lighted tennis courts, a two-stall barn with a riding ring and expansive gardens. The property, which has a Walk Score of 23 and a Transit Score of a big fat zero, was last sold for $2.7 million in 2007 — pre-renovation. It now asks $4,995,000 and has been languishing on the market for 567 days. Why isn't it selling?
