Ground Breaks on Two More Midtown Apartment Towers

New, 26 comments

Bulldozers and backhoes are chewing asphalt and dirt at two Midtown sites where a pair of mixed-use apartment towers will rise. The construction activity joins a groundswell of recently opened, under-construction or planned apartment towers in the red-hot Atlanta submarket — and it marks the end of a sizable parking lot and grassy lot with some recreational qualities. Site No. 1, at 33 Peachtree Place, is a roughly four-acre parking lot bordering 8th and Cypress streets. Right across the street from the Midtown MARTA Station, the property is slated for a 19-story tower with 343 apartments, plus about 19,000 square feet of retail. A specific timeline for the Wood Partners project is unclear, but the chainlink fences, bulldozers and churned-up asphalt spotted this week can't mean anything but site work is afoot.

Site No. 2 sits about a half-mile away at the corner of 5th and Peachtree streets. A future JLB Partners production — exact address 780 Peachtree St. — the project should include a 10-story tower with somewhere between 2,500 and 7,000 square feet of street-level restaurant space. A total of 290 "upscale apartment units" are expected, though developers have said the potential for conversion to condos exists. With some previously existing landscaping still there, there's a little more gray area when it comes to the perceived progress at 780 Peachtree — but it's definitely fenced off, there's definitely a bulldozer and some dirt has definitely moved.
