On the final day of 2014, a deal was struck at The Residences at W Atlanta-Downtown to make this "trophy penthouse" the most expensive rental in the history of downtown, according to the leasing agent. The new tenant will fork over $13,000 per month, which makes rents at Buckhead Atlanta seem like government housing. So what does 13 large get? For this type of renter, the icing on the cake was probably the W's four-star amenities, valet parking, concierge and 24-hour room service. Having Atlanta's only residential heliport on the roof probably didn't hurt. As for the penthouse, it's a sleek and cavernous space with more windows than Pella. It has two bedrooms, two and ½ baths, a den and office, and perks like the Gaggenau kitchen and cutting-edge home automation. The finishes are described as "indulgent" and the views "arresting," as captured in some cases by a fish-eye lens! Coldwell Banker Atlanta's Marc Castillo said MLS data show no condo has ever rented for more downtown, though one commanded $14,000/month somewhere in Midtown. Since the condo wasn't purchased, we'll have to guess who the well-heeled renter might be. In the past, the building has been a magnet for Atlanta Braves. Most of them could afford the security deposit: $14,050.
