Edgewood MARTA Mixed-Use to Break Ground First

New, 25 comments

The Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA station is reportedly leading the race to morph underutilized parking lots around train stations into teaming hubs of mixed-use activity. MARTA has filed for permits to begin construction on the first phase of a transit-oriented development (TOD) by Columbia Ventures along La France Street, on the south side of the station. What Now Atlanta reports the development's first phase will feature apartments, green space, and street-level retail in Edgewood. A groundbreaking is slated for early next year, and MARTA hopes to wrap the initial phase by the end of 2017. If all goes as planned, the project will be a bellwether for MARTA's widespread efforts to activate dead seas of asphalt and boost ridership. Other TODs are planned across the city and could transform stations at Oakland City, King Memorial, Kensington, Avondale, Brookhaven and Chamblee.
