Prepare to be filled with seasonally appropriate warm and fuzzy feelings. Just in time for the holidays, a gleaming new facility for families of sick children has opened near the hospitals on Pill Hill in Sandy Springs. The new Ronald-McDonald House — yes, the same McDonald of golden-fried goodness and Big Macs — replaced a home which for years could not accommodate all those in need of its services. But now, with 31 fully accessible guest rooms, the home will provide a "home away from home" for families with children spending time in the hospital. And far from fast food chic, the final result is a form and function combo meal...
Big on space — the new three-story facility is more than 52,000 square feet — the building is small on environmental impact. Designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) standards, the home is energy-efficient, with sustainable features throughout. The house is centered around a three-story glass atrium complete with an indoor treehouse perfect for kids to unwind and have fun. Overall, the new facility is a radical improvement over the old 11-room traditional home which stood on the site. While the circumstances that bring families to the home aren't ideal, the good news is that in 2016, the new Ronald-McDonald House will be able to help many families!
