Atlanta's oldest continuously operated fire station — a landmark that's stood in the heart of Virginia-Highland for nearly a century — could be shut down next year, unless cash can be raised for a renovation, a neighborhood fundraising website states. According to the site, the city has hush-hush plans to shut down Fire Station 19 in 2016, which has left "key constituents in the neighborhood … very concerned about the possible loss of this historic resource that is central to our safety and community life." In light of the news, a Va-Hi coterie of architects, historians, preservationists, community leaders and contractors has sprung into action, raising $80,000 so far.
