Blight Patrol

Donning bright yellow vests, Atlanta inmates are out in force boarding up blighted properties in the city in a move that's proving to be a win-win, reports Creative Loafing. Dubbed "Clean and Close," the program came to be through a city-wide staff competition and allows inmates some time outside while saving code enforcement officials $320,000 in just the last nine months. There are strict rules for participating in the program — violent offenders are a big no-no — but for those who qualify, every 10 days of service equals one day off their sentence.
