This week, workers are restoring the steeple of an Athens church where Georgia rock legends R.E.M. played their first show exactly 35 years ago. The 1869 church had been converted to residences by the time R.E.M. (performing as the Twisted Kites) raised the roof, and it was torn down a decade later to make way for condos, leaving the now-iconic steeple exposed. After a crowdfunding campaign, a nonprofit that aides musicians is restoring the site, complete with a meditative garden. [Athens Banner-Herald. Photo: Jason Thrasher, via WABE.]
