Historical Perspectives

The Braves have opened the season with two wins, delighting die-hard choppers everywhere and helping ease the blow of relentless offseason trades. With the penultimate season opening at The Ted on Friday night, it's not too early to start reminiscing on the Braves' time in Summerhill, which started long before their two-decade occupation of Turner Field. It was 41 years ago tonight, at the opening of the 1971 season at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, that Hank Aaron made history with homer #715 — and from I.J. Rosenberg's recounting of the night in the AJC, it seems to have been something truly magical. [The homerun. Image: Corbis]
