PBS NewsHour taps billionaire Warren Buffet, former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and others for a fascinating piece called "Can Atlanta's poor neighborhoods be lifted out of poverty?" that's posted on YouTube now. They focus on downtrodden pockets of South Atlanta to illustrate "concentrated poverty," which one expert says has jumped 80 percent in America in the last 15 years, and as a contrast, they investigate the success of East Lake's mixed-income housing model. Franklin divulges that, in the 1980s, the home of East Lake Golf Club and Drew Charter School was the only neighborhood in Atlanta she would not drive to alone, adding, "I was terrified."
