Two years after its David-versus-Goliath plight made for national news, Friendship Baptist Church has staked its claim to a site owned by Atlanta University Center and plans to build anew. This new church will rise in Vine City, about four blocks from the 1862 house of God that was gobbled by the new Falcons stadium, once the congregation had accepted a $19.5 million payout. Church leaders told the Saporta Report this new incarnation of Friendship will pay homage to the old church without trying to replicate it, and plans call for opening it by April 2017 to honor the congregation's 155th anniversary.
