Paul Morris, Atlanta Beltline Inc. president and CEO, pens a column this week that makes a case for extending the Atlanta Streetcar into the Beltline corridor as soon as possible. Morris points to the streetcar's 200,000 riders thus far — a number that exceeds ridership expectations by 20 percent, he says — as proof that "Atlantans, young and old, from all walks of life, want this opportunity for transit expansion." The Beltline, Morris posits, will serve as the "conduit" of a robust streetcar system that blankets the city, and he divulges that 16 miles of environmental work is under way for streetcar connections between Piedmont Park and Reynoldstown, Adair Park to Maddox Park and a crosstown route via North Avenue/Hollowell Parkway.
