Believe it or not, it's been 25 years since the President of the International Olympic Committee announced Atlanta was awarded the Centennial Olympic Games. While Atlanta had already been a city on the way up, the event catapulted our hometown into the international consciousness and contributed to development throughout the city, the echos of which reverberate to this day. In celebration of the anniversary of the announcement, the city will be throwing a party in Centennial Olympic Park on Sept. 18, the AJC reports, with an even bigger festival on tap for July 2016 to celebrate 20 years since Atlanta's Opening Ceremonies.
