After more than eight years, work has finally started in Brookhaven to bring a new mixed-use development — complete with Walgreens and 32,000 square feet of office space — to Peachtree Road, just north of Buckhead. Demolition began this week on the burned-out and beaten shell of a building roughly a block from the Brookhaven MARTA station. It's been a long road for developer Gipco Southern, who encountered financial setbacks and community resistance along the way. But with the three-story development finally started, there's tangible evidence that changes are coming to the neighborhood, whether residents like it or not. And the changes won't stop there. Across the street, work is under way on a Total Wine store, while plans for a residential development and a mixed-use MARTA project are in the works. For folks with an appetite for destruction, there's likely more to come along Peachtree in the very near future.
