Buford Highway — long associated with ethnic food and lots of asphalt — is on a mission to spruce up its image. Nexus, a mixed-use development by Macauley Investments, is moving past the planning stage and marching toward construction, after a due-diligence period and environmental study wraps, according to the Brookhaven Post. With a mix of 350 apartments, 140 senior living units, a 140-key hotel and 44,000 square feet of retail space, the development will bring new uses, high design and sustainability — according to architects Wakefield Beasley & Associates — to an oft-maligned corridor. Across Interstate 285 from Assembly, the new development isn't all that far from the Doraville MARTA station. With transit access, mixed-use-ness and relatively slick design, could this be the new face of Buford Highway? Macauley is banking on it, with involvement in nearby projects like Assembly and The Olmstead, too. Demolition could begin in early 2016 with completion scheduled for late 2017.
