Get your soccer scarves ready, DeKalb County denizens: Atlanta's new Major League Soccer team could soon have a new home. The DeKalb County Commission will vote today on establishing a partnership with the Atlanta United Football Club to construct a training facility and headquarters near Memorial Drive and Interstate 285, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Plans call for a 15,000- to 20,000-square-foot corporate headquarters, a 3,500-seat stadium and three practice fields to be built alongside the county jail. In the future, an indoor training center and three more fields could be added on an adjacent 11-acre tract.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that if approved, the 30-acre development would be the largest project the neighborhood has seen in decades. DeKalb would contribute between $3 million and $5 million for site preparation, but the investment could spur the creation of 123 full-time jobs. Atlanta United would be on the hook for a 20-year lease, with two additional five-year options to extend the agreement, at which point the property would revert back to the county.
