Remember Imagine Memorial? It was that grand vision of a balanced, interconnected Memorial Drive dreamed up by a class at Georgia Tech back in 2014. Well, it's a year and a half later and city officials are saying the road could be a "gateway to Atlanta" now that state officials are considering a traffic study of the corridor. Who doesn't love a plan about a plan about a plan?
For a while now — decades at this point — Memorial Drive has felt more than a bit slipshod. The street is plagued by spotty zoning, inconsistent traffic flow, limited mobility for bikes and pedestrians, not to mention potholes, potholes, potholes. Greg Giuffrida, a student who worked on the Georgia Tech project, is now the Memorial Drive Corridor Executive operating under Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement district. He told Decaturish assorted stakeholders have been in talks with the Georgia Department of Transportation to finalize the scope of the traffic study.
Memorial serves as a border across two counties and eight neighborhoods. As a result, current and proposed features might vary dramatically from section to section. So, the process of redevelopment will, in practice, be the cumulation of several visions. When Decaturish spoke to Giuffrida, he said Imagine Memorial needs to find a way to "balance between higher density growth and lower density historical character" in the western portion of Memorial Drive.
