Yet another high-rise apartment tower could soon be underway in Midtown, following the clearing of land at the corner of 8th and West Peachtree streets.
Alexan 880 — a 22-story tower with 356 apartments, 10,000 square feet of retail, and a seven-story parking structure topped by an amenity deck — appears to be moving forward right now.
Located kitty-corner from the nearly complete Alta Midtown, which has brought 343 apartments, the Alexan building promises to continue the trend of residential density on this western Midtown flank. The site is a stone’s throw from the Midtown MARTA Station.
Proposed early this year, the project looked destined to move ahead when permit applications were submitted in April. However, despite the availability of demolition permits, the site remained dormant through the year. Midtown Alliance still lists the tower as a proposal, and not a project currently under construction.
The venture would be the next in a series of Alexan-branded properties in the metro — though the first high-rise — following projects like Alexan on Krog and Alexan EAV.
But before this tower can rise, a four-story midcentury office building, which currently fills the southern portion of the site, must be demolished.
Last occupied by the law firm Drew Eckl Farnham, the structure is now vacant and presumably primed for the wrecking ball, following the firm’s departure to downtown.
