MARTA is officially rocking and rolling on their latest transit-oriented development project, this one located at the Avondale station in Decatur.

According to the Saporta Report, the groundbreaking ceremony means the Columbia Ventures-led project is on its way to replacing an underutilized parking lot along East College Avenue.

The project includes 378 market-rate apartments and 92 units of affordable senior housing. The buildings will sit around an 800-space parking deck and be ringed by 22,000 square feet of retail space.

Designed by recent-award winning firm Dwell Design Studio, the building sits atop the bus transfer station and provides direct access into the MARTA train station via a pedestrian bridge adjacent to a large transit plaza.

The groundbreaking marks a major milestone in the agonizingly slow development of the proposal. Floated years ago, plans started to materialize back in 2013, with details released in early 2015.

Plans call for the project to be done in 2018.

The site in the near future. The building overlooks East College Avenue, with a bridge leading to the train station across the street and a hip retailer called Signage.

At least MARTA is having better luck in Decatur than they are in Brookhaven...
