MARTA's Mixed-Use Overhaul in Brookhaven Hits a Snag

City delays rezoning for major development that would replace surface parking

Grand plans for the transformation of surface parking lots around Brookhaven MARTA station into a major mixed-use development have been sidetracked. According to Reporter Newspapers, the Transit Oriented Development has been put on hold pending rezoning approval by the Brookhaven City Council. While MARTA officials had intented for the project to get underway this spring, recent vocal opposition has cropped up due to concerns about the impact of traffic in surrounding neighborhoods. Now city officials have bowed to the concerns, stating they will not approve rezoning until after infrastructure needs have been studied, meaning the rezoning application will not be addressed until at least June 1.

The station is just one of four slated for major TODs under a new MARTA initiative to boost ridership and revenue through the leasing of underutilized land surrounding their stations. But with NIMBY resistance, could these specific plans be derailed?
