The southward creep of Beltline investment continues. A five-story, multifamily project with 220 units is in the works near Maynard Jackson High School, on the Grant Park side of the Beltline's future Southside Trail. Early renderings suggest the project could be called, inventively, "842 Berne Street."
Lafarge Building Materials submitted an application for rezoning to city officials earlier this month that, if successful, would switch several properties along Berne and Killian streets to an MRC-3 Beltline designation, allowing for mixed residential and commercial uses.
Last week, the plans came before South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development (SAND) — an umbrella organization that serves residents and businesses between Grant Park and East Atlanta.
At the meeting, neighbors expressed concerns about traffic, tree preservation, public Beltline access, and whether the units would be rentals or condos, according to SAND. (Nothing in the paperwork indicates whether the residences will be rentals or for sale). Others have worried that the area can't handle the addition of a project as large as five stories with 220 new residences.
Expect votes by SAND and the Grant Park Neighborhood Association's Land Use and Zoning leaders in early April.
