Modern new look brings luxury mall up to date

The new entry is a futuristic design, with splayed metal columns supporting a glass canopy, which is framed by a back-lit perforated metal panel system.

A months-long renovation of Phipps Plaza is wrapping up in Buckhead, and the results are dramatic. The first phase of a multi-year plan to modernize the mall and create a full service "lifestyle center" out of the Peachtree Road institution known for high-end shopping, the completed work has updated a decidedly 1980s facility dominated by brass fixtures and dated wood accents. Not only an aesthetic transformation, the site is being amenitized, with the parking lots being filled by residences and a hotel. General Manager Eric Howard showed us around and previewed the still-to-come changes:

Along Peachtree Road, the newly finished facade is an eclectic mix of finishes toned in blacks, whites, and beige.

The aesthetic of the front facade is boxy and modern.

Currently dominated by a large concrete sidewalk, the front of the mall will be spruced up in coming phases, with curbside eating areas and plantings to re-envision the front of the mall along the lines of a European high street.

The perforated metal panels surrounding the front door of the building are backlit by LEDs, which can change colors and even form ghosted images.

The rear of the facility is still dominated by the color scheme from the 1980s. Plans call for it to eventually receive a similar treatment to the front.

Older wooden columns have been re-clad with marble to create a more modern atrium space.

The "Court of the South" has been updated with new lighting and modern brushed steel handrails.

The handrails are etched with flowers to blend a subtle southern sense of style in with the more modern aesthetic.
