Big news for tourists and Atlanta history buffs! The Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced the launch of an audio tour of historic downtown via the travel social media app, Geotourist.
And it's free!
Highlighting buildings constructed between 1890 and 1930, the tour harnesses the power of smartphones to celebrate the architectural heritage and ongoing revitalization of downtown Atlanta, officials said.
Starting at the Candler Building, the tour travels south along Peachtree Street past Woodruff Park, the Flatiron Building, and the C&S/Empire Building, among others in the Fairlie-Poplar Historic District. Along the journey, the app explains the history of the buildings and talks about the development of early Atlanta.
The app is available to download for free from the Apple and Google stores; access each site’s audio tour based on their geographic positioning.
