The Atlanta Hawks and Emory University have formed an unlikely team to develop a practice facility, headquarters for the basketball club, and sports medicine enclave well north of the team's downtown roost.
Announced Tuesday in a joint press conference, the facility will be located along Interstate 85 in Brookhaven. The announcement was the first indication that the University had purchased 60 acres in Executive Park, a sprawling 1970s office complex straddling North Druid Hills Road.
The project joins a major expansion of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, proposed last year to rise on the site of the recently imploded Executive Park Hotel.
The 90,000-square foot complex will not only provide the Hawks with their first dedicated practice facility — the team has used Philips Arena since 1999 — but will also serve as the team's headquarters. Additionally, California-based Peak Performance Project (P3), a center that tests and trains athletes, is on board for the collaboration.
