The majority of MARTA bus stops throughout Atlanta are little more than small rectangular signs mounted to a pole, making the system incredibly unfriendly to those who don’t already know when the bus is coming or where they can take it to. But a growing army of folks is trying to change that.
The so-called "MARTA Army" has been meeting over the last few years to bolster the MARTA system through community engagement and support. As the group gathers traction, it has attracted the attention and support of the city’s head of planning, Tim Keane, among others.
Now, city officials and the MARTA Army are collaborating to create new signs for MARTA stops with route and time information to reflect a system-wide schedule shift that went into effect earlier this month.
But rather than boring old information signs, these new features could be something special, if grassroots plans come to fruition.
During the upcoming work session, participants will be provided with everything they need to create a colorful schedule sign, including crayons, glitter, and various items to produce eye-catching collages. And as each stop is "adopted" by someone different, there will likely be a lot of styles represented across the system.
For those wanting to try out their artistic side and lend to the cause of transit growth in Atlanta, the work session will be this Saturday afternoon at the Atlanta City Studio in Ponce City Market. All are welcome to sign up in advance to adopt a stop and participate in the sign creation.
