No joke: Dad’s Garage nominated for design award

Transformation of church building in Old Fourth Ward lands comedy troupe on design excellence list

Call it divine intervention: Atlanta comedy club Dad's Garage has made the finalist list for the Urban Land Institute's Atlanta annual design awards.

The recognition comes for the group's new venue — the reincarnation of a former church in Old Fourth Ward. The renovation, completed by Pimsler Hoss Architects, transformed the standard sanctuary into a house of hilarity. But not before a "desanctification ceremony" was complete.

A major celebration was held for the opening of the new venue early this year, but no doubt the icing on the cake for the troupe is some serious recognition for their design efforts.

That being said, Dad's competition for ULI hardware is no laughing matter.

Other finalists for the award include Ponce City Market, Abernathy Greenway, Waterhub at Emory, Porsche Experience Center, Square on Fifth, and The Office apartments. (Surprisingly, Fuqua Development's Glenwood Place got snubbed).

Winners will be announced Sept. 15 at an awards banquet at the Atlanta History Center.
