Watch out, Pill Hill — there’s a massive new medical district about to boom in the metro area.
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has announced their plans to construct a hospital complex at the intersection of North Druid Hills Road and Interstate 85. According to a press release, the complex will cost between $1 and $1.3 billion, making it the most costly medical campus ever built in the state.
While plans are still coming together, it’s likely many of the single-story office buildings that currently stand on the 45-acre campus will be torn down to build mid- and high-rise structures. The hospital intends to build for demand anticipated over the next two decades.

The project will be a major compliment to the Center for Advanced Pediatrics and Emory Healthcare sports medicine complex, which are both already under construction in the area.
Until recently, the soon-to-be medical district was located in unincorporated DeKalb County. The area south of Interstate 85 was annexed by Brookhaven following the announcement of the Emory project.
The city has been grappling with density and development in recent weeks, including the recent termination of negotiations for a major transit-oriented development around the city’s only MARTA station.
Hopefully the new hospital won’t generate too much traffic.
