Last week, we explored the widespread development consuming Buckhead, highlighting 33 active or planned construction projects in the area.
Given the pace of physical changes, it seemed an opportune time to look back and see how far Buckhead has come since the recession-induced development doldrums, too.
In the last few years, apartment blocks have transformed forests, and towers have risen on former parking lots.
Below, have a look at some of the most incredible transformations, captured in before and after images from Google:
- The Aaron Building in Buckhead Village as of July 2015. Google Maps
- The building, now undergoing transformation to loft offices, as of November. Google Maps
- In July 2015, a mid-century strip center filled the block at the southeast corner of Pharr Road and Grandview Avenue. Google Maps
- As of October, the site is buzzing with construction on Alexan Pharr Road. Google Maps
- On West Paces Ferry Road, the Atlanta History Center had a large lawn facing Slaton Drive when photographed in April 2015. Google Maps
- Now, that lawn is filled with the new home of the Atlanta Cyclorama, seen under construction in November. Google Maps
- On East Andrews, a stand of trees is seen in October 2012 where a development proposed before the Great Recession never happened. Google Maps
- By October, the berm and forest had been replaced by townhomes. Google Maps
- At Lindbergh, old apartments filled the blocks south of Morosgo Drive in August 2012. Google Maps
- The apartments were torn down and the road relocated, and now a Kroger can be seen rising across from Elan Lindbergh in April 2016. Google Maps
- Charlie Loudermilk Park underwent a major upgrade that opened just prior to this July 2015 shot. Google Maps
- As of November, Hanover’s 21-story apartment building can be seen rising next to Buckhead Theatre. Google Maps
- Just south of where Lindbergh Drive meets Peachtree Road, a lot cleared before the recession sat empty in October 2012. Google Maps
- Now, that lot is filled with luxury apartments known as Haynes House, seen in November. Google Maps
- In September 2014, one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in the city—just east of Lenox Square—sat vacant and overgrown. Google Maps
- Since, AMLI has developed a high-rise apartment tower (back left) and is wrapping up work on two mid-rise blocks, all surrounding a new park, as part of AMLI 3464. Google Maps
- Along Peachtree Street in South Buckhead, dozens of small-scale midcentury buildings line the corridor, as seen in August 2015. Google Maps
- After an extensive renovation, one of the old office buildings was reborn as a storage facility by November, with three new floors added. Google Maps
- In September 2014, small-scale multifamily buildings filled the block between Pharr Road and East Paces Ferry Road at Old Decatur Road. Google Maps
- By October, the entire block had been replaced by the 375-unit Hanover East Paces. Google Maps
- For decades, woods filled the land behind Phipps Plaza fronting Wieuca Road, as seen in September 2014. Google Maps
- The Domain at Phipps, a large apartment development, had swallowed the former woods as it moved toward completion in October. Google Maps
- The open breezeway at Terminus, connecting the inner part of the development to Piedmont Road, was often an unpleasant wind tunnel, as seen in September 2014. Google Maps
- The area was filled in with retail and offices by November. Google Maps
- In October 2014, construction on Post Alexander Phase II, one of many new Buckhead apartment towers, was underway along Lenox Road near Georgia Highway 400. Google Maps
- With the apartment tower completed, work was also nearly finished on Three Alliance Center, the area’s newest office high-rise, back in October. Google Maps
